An ILAN is a network designed to operate in the harsh conditions of an industrial environment (temperature extremes, humidity, vibration, electromagnetic interference). It is built for reliability, determinism (predictable timing), and real-time performance, which are critical for control applications. While often based on standard technologies like Ethernet, it uses ruggedized hardware and specialized protocols.
A fieldbus is a digital, serial, industrial network system used for real-time distributed control. It connects field-level devices (sensors, actuators) to PLCs or controllers, replacing traditional 4–20 mA wiring, reducing cost and complexity while enabling diagnostics.
Modbus is a communication protocol originally developed by Modicon (now owned by Schneider Electric since 1996) in 1979. It is known for creating the first programmable logic controller (PLC) in 1968, and today the Modicon brand is used for Schneider Electric's PLCs and other industrial automation products.
